Celtic Cut-work and
More Creative Cut-work

Celtic Cut-work

Taking Celtic designs as a starting point and working with synthetic fabrics, create unique pieces to include in your textile work.  Based on traditional cut-work principles, this technique requires an ability to do free-machine embroidery and introduces the student to working with a soldering iron to cut and distress the textile surface. Some handwork involved for finishing techniques.

More Creative Cut-work

Free-machine embroidery, synthetic materials, a soldering iron and a heat gun adds up to a fun filled creative day.  This is really a follow-on day to Celtic Cut-work where students can further explore this exciting technique with the added interest of a variety of art materials to enhance and embellish your textured surface.

It is a quick and easy method, the pockets are already made for you, and it doesn’t dirty easily and goes with any casual outfit.

Trollope: embellish and texture workshop

“Bolt from the Blue”

This is a workshop where you can really go to town on the embellishments and create textures previously un-discovered! (and in any colour you choose!)

The Embellisher machine creates a completely different look when used with silk chiffon and for those with pre-conceived ideas of embellishing felt and wool this could just change your perception!

This workshop can be done with a hand held Clover Embellisher tool but this will not produce the same results as an electric powered machine and will be a considerably slower method – but not impossible!

Berlyn: Black magic

Black Magic

A brilliant new experimental workshop

Start with a black piece of cotton fabric and try printing with thermofax screens and discharge paste – iron it and see the colour disappear. Then print over it, using the same screen but this time use gold and/or silver fabric paint to create a sumptuous piece of textile, which can be stitched with metallic threads and embellished with even more beads, sequins, shishas or  metallic organzas.  This piece can be made into a little bag, cushion, filofax cover or a case for your glasses.

Wednesday 29th September 2010

10.00am to 4.00pm

Cost £40 per day,
or £75 for 2 days - 28th and 29th with same tutor, see workshop above.

Tutor:

Ineke Berlyn

lutrador landscape

Lutradur Landscape and experimental screen printing

Lutradur is a new and exciting fabric, a bit like Vilene but crisper. It lends itself to be painted with acrylic paint and it stitches really well.  Layers are bonded together using Bondaweb and then it can be stitched by machine.  It is ideal for small projects and samples.  The result is something in between a painting and a stitched wallhanging.
Bring a picture of your favourite landscape or flowers and step by step we will explore the magic of lutradur in colour and texture to transform it into your own unique piece of textile art.
We will also be working on white or hand dyed fabric with some extra experimental screen printing using thermofax screens.

Printmaking

Come and have a go at the classical art of printmaking, using an intaglio and relief printing press. Try out different methods from the traditional, to quick easy modern print forms, such as dry point, where you scratch into a surface (this used to be metal, copper as the old masters used, but Sophie uses very thin perspex which is much cheaper!) so the printing ink will stick in the groves, for printing, collagraph, lino, and hand made rubber stamps.  Create a repeated pattern for paper, cards or a creative masterpiece!

Free Machine Embroidery – the easy way

This is machine embroidery the easy way.  Choose a picture, learn how to break up the design into stitch areas and then start to ‘paint’ your picture. The entire surface of the fabric is covered by machine embroidery; you will be amazed how quickly this is accomplished. The whole project becomes quite similar to ‘paint (or in this case: machine embroider) by numbers!’  Incredibly simple with the most stunning textural and rich results!

Julie Kline has worked for Windsor Castle, Hampton Court, Frogmore House, English Heritage and the National Trust as well as numerous international projects.  She has a First Class degree in Fashion Design.
